Unit Theme: Wetlands Habitat Program Unit Number: 13

Activity Resources Level of Proficiency Standard[s] Treated (Technology & Human Affairs)
Day 1

Reinforce Recognize that water in the Earth System exists naturally in all three states. Examine models and evidence that driven by gravity and heat, water continuously circulates through the Earth’s crust, oceans, and air in the water (hydrologic) cycle. Provide examples illustrating that water plays important roles in regulating Earth’s climate and shaping Earth’s crust.

Habits of Mind: Curiosity

Day 2

Create a wetland food web.

Reinforce Classify organisms according to the function they serve in a food chain (any single organism can serve each of these functions). Production of food, consumption of food, or decomposition of organic matter.

Habits of Mind: Sense of stewardship

Day 3

Visit more than one local wetland to compare different types of wetlands (bogs, swamps, marshes, flood plains) and learn how living things depend on wetlands.

Reinforce Ecosystems and Organisms

Present evidence that species depend on one another. Describe ways in which interactions of organisms with each other and non-living parts of their environments result in the flow of energy and matter throughout the system.

Habits of Mind: Respect for evidence

Day 4

Measure water quality factors such as temperature to begin to understand how factors affect organisms and plants.

Wetland Guide pp. 15-17, 54, 65-8, 91

Reinforce Diversity and Adaptation of Organisms

Explain situations in which short-term changes in available food, moisture, or temperature of an ecosystem may result in a change in the number of organisms in a population or in the average size of individual organisms or in the behavior of individuals in a population. Explore through modes and evidence ways in which long term changes may result in the elimination of a population or the introduction of new populations.

Habits of Mind: Respect for evidence and persistence

Reinforce Develop skills in applying scientific knowledge to making decisions about societal problems and recognize that using the skills responsibly is an essential part of being a citizen in today’s world.

Habits of Mind: Curiosity, a sense of stewardship

Unit Home Assignment:

"What Am I" (pp.79-81) "Who Am I" (pp. 82-83), of the Wetland Habitat Guide are puzzle questions that will be used to reinforce students knowledge of different types of wetlands and what species of plants and animals are present.

Unit Assessment Strategy:

After completing a field trip to a local wetland, students will analyze their water quality data (p. 91 of Wetlands Guide) and write a paragraph describing why they think the water quality of their wetland is "poor", "fair", or "good".
