Plotting A Storm
Hurricane center positions are given by
latitude and longitude. For example, "The storm
center is located near 46 degrees north and 51.5 degrees
west." On a chart read north 46 degrees and west
51.5 degrees. |

Hurricane Scale
Storm surge, wind, and other factors determine the
Hurricane's scale which assigns storms to five
categories. |
Category 1
-Winds 75-95 mph or storm surge 4-5 ft above normal, minimum
damage, no structural damage and some minimum flooding. |
Category 2
-Winds 96-110 mph or storm surge 6-8 ft above normal, moderate
damage, roofing material, window and door damage, coastal and
lowline floods. |
Category 3
-Wind 111-130 mph or storm surge 9-12 ft above normal,
extensive damage, structural damage to small residents, mobile
homes destroyed, flooding near coast, and small and large
damage by flooding. |
Category 4
-Winds 131-155 mph
or storm surge 13-18 ft above normal, extreme damage, major
erosion on beach, major damage on lower floors, mobile homes
don't stand a chance!, and complete roof failure.

Category 5
-Winds greater than 155 mph, storm surge greater than 18 ft,
catastrophic damage, some buildings may be blown over or away,
